  6. May I know kannada name for Smelt fish

    ReplyDelete
  7. Smelt fish is not found in india, but people refer the above fishes as smelt sometimes. Coastal Karnataka, especially in Mangalore and Udupi regions, its known as Nethili , Bolingei (ಬೊಳಂಜೆ) in Kannada and Tulu and MotiyaLe in Konkani. Kane, nogli fish is at times refered as smelt( whiting smelt). These small, silvery-green fish, also known as rainbow smelt, are similar in appearance to sardines and anchovies

The silversides and other unrelated fishes are sometimes also called smelts. Smelts are found in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and in lakes in North America and northern part of Europe. Smelts are Anadromous fishes means those that spend most of their lives in the sea but migrate to fresh water to spawn

Anchovy is saltwater fish of the engraulidae family and is distinguished from smelt (family Osmeridae) by wide mouth and long eyes and relative position of fins with dorsal wholly behind.

Please refer Anchovy here to see the pictures of Anchovy and smelt
